exsessive oil consumption/new turbo
« on: November 10, 2007, 01:39:15 pm »
Just got my 97 td 1.9 back from a local garage after fitting a new turbo /second hand but spins and no play it drive really well but drove 120miles today and used all the oil , when i pulled up at a garage to get more oil and opened the bonnet fresh oil was all over the rocker cover , injection pump and turbo engine intake
Im worried that the oil lines for the turbo may be blocked or wrong as oil is coming out of the breather pipe at top and also where it meets the block, heres a pick of my busted turbo if this makes a difference.or maybe not photobucket aint working for me

well what was the oil consumption before this turbo? why did you swap this turbo in? what shape was the old turbo? does the compressor wheel look good? maybe little bits were sent into the motor scoring the cyl walls, eating pistons & rings to give you mad blow by???  just a theory...

are you running more than 10 psi boost? i noticed a very large increase in oil consumption when boosting to 15-20 psi.

well the consuption was bad before when the old turbo went but im more worried about the oil spraying out all over the engine
The old turbo had been going for a while then finally gave up , the engine runs and sounds fine and starts easily and dont smoke either its done 86k

well the oil is coming from somewhere... is it spraying at idle?  some blowby is normal...

what did the old turbo look like? compressor wheel still intact? no little parts missing from it?

you probably just need new rings.

didnt see any bits missing but will check tomorrow but does not leak at idle only when driven hard ie motorway constant strain , do you mean oil seals it turbo?

piston rings.  how many km's on motor?  it could be the turbo that is leaking oil into the intake.  take off the hose going from the compressor to the intake manifold (do not let any dirt or crap to fall in) and check for oil residue.  if there is a lot, it could be the problem.

did you mess with the boost? or are you running stock boost levels?

its done 80k do you mean the air filter intake? was running slightly higher boost and fuel but nothing crazy and with this turbo pretty much stock boost with tiny fuel increase

Remove the oil cap, if you can see your camshaft, you're missing a splash guard under the valve cover. It prevents the oil being thrown around by the cam to get into the breather.

Its hard to tell exactly where the oil is comming from, but it looks like the majority of the leak is comming from the front of the engine.  I'd investigate those pressure switches on the oil filter housing, or the swedge fitting on the turbo oil supply line.  Looks like a hi pressure leak right below the upper radiator hose.

If it didn't hose down the front of the engine with oil befor the shop worked on it, they left something loose or broke something in the process.

Check the oil feed line to make sure it's not leaking. They may have bent it on you. It looks pretty rusty

Ok will do , im gonna book it back in again tmrw ,just want it sorting asap because its costing £30 a day to travel to work instead of £10 in the golf lol

The front was clean when i got it back but after 1 120mile trip it was dirty again , also noticed the turbo is noisy on spooling compared to the old unit

Had a quick look today and checked the metal oil feed seems to be fine no unusual kinks , refilled with oil and tryed to start but my battery went dead after a couple of turns , gonna wait for a friend to jump start it then wipe off all the oil and leave it running for a bit to see where the oil is coming from hopefully if not take it for a blast then look again

I will have a think about huddersfield as it aint that far from where i work  just very hilly lol
