vw-tim's 1981 diesel Caddy build

Hey everyone so i just picked up a 1981 diesel caddy without the engine it needs some work but it looks to be rust free and in great shape im just working on getting my little 1.5L diesel engine into at the moment but just thought id post up some pics of it! here she is when i got her home came with a lot of extra parts so gonna get everything looked at and unloaded.





im pretty stoked on it and gonna be slowly getting her cleaned up when i have time between work and school! hope everyone is having a good day! Hopefully ill be asking less questions on here and just posting more progress thank you all who have helped me on here i really appreciate it!

VW Tim,  Looks in fair shape.  But what is under that hood?  Anything right now?  We all want to see the engine bay especially the strut mounts.  And then the floor boards.  Caddy rep says they are rusting.  Emergency brake is a 4 X 4.  Now where have I seen that before?

Good luck with it.  Paint color will be what?

more pics on the way! i bought it with no engine and i just put in the 1.5L diesel i rebuilt

emergency brakes do work i just put the 4x4 there just so i could sleep easy that night. floor boards look very solid no rust at all as with strut towers everything looks incredibly solid!

and i think im gonna just leave the paint how it is i dont plan on painting it at least not right away

i actually have one previous owner took it off. but thank you though! i could use a front VW emblem i guess the late westy ones are alittle smaller

My son told me not to worry about getting a VW badge on that hole. 

He said I needed a red peace symbol instead because all I did was buy a piece of Shhhlll. 

No appreciation for the finer things in life.  POS indeed.

I too, am interested in this Caddy build. Looks like you've got a good start. If you live near a community college, sometimes they have auto painting classes & spray booths. That's what I did, and it was a great experience.

so little update on the truck got the engine in and everything wired up she runs and i just need to figure out the shift linkage stuff i cant find first gear but i found reverse lol so i gotta look at that just thought id post up some pics! hope everyone is doing good!

I like how you moved the battery 90*. Makes the engine compartment look much roomier. I was thinking of doing the same thing. My plasma cut Stainless Steel battery tray came today. It's for an Optima 34. I'll be doing some electric upgrades to go with it.

Very nice build. The side terminals on the battery is a good idea too. I was worried that when I turned mine it may be too tall to clear the hood safely.

What did you do with the windshield washer bottle and motor?  Or has that yet to be decided?

i bought the truck with out it but maybe ill put it in later

Might be room in front of the battery and behind the light.  Or extend a wire and hose to the other corner of the engine bay where there is a ton of room.  You might find the correct rad overflow bottle that can just slip into the bracket over there and run a pump mounted on the frame rail or fender.

Isn't the passenger side where the washer bottle is supposed to mount? Every MK1 I've owned had it there.
