VNT turbo on a JX manifold
« on: April 04, 2010, 05:49:50 pm »
I am thinking of going the TDI route for my transporter but to save some time and energy i'd like to use a JX manifold i already have so i don't have to fabricate a new l/s engine mount. So that's the question, has anybody tried to fit one to the JX manifold which came on Vanagon diesels.

I have to admit here that i'm being kinda lazy and i know that they won't actually bolt up easy, but i was wondering if it was easy, a bit of fabrication and welding, or a real pain.

the problem is that if i lie down to look, i'll want to stay there and take a nap.

i think it's   an isosceles  trapizoid. There are other manifolds like it but not sure/too lazy to figure it out which ones right now.

im almost for positive that its the same flange that the rabbit/jetta diesel turbos use. and i know of no VNT's that have that flange on them, its kinda a VW only thing from what ive seen.

If i remember right [ that doesn't always happen ] the TDI VNT is a complete unit with the turbo housing. Without having one in front of me I'm wondering if there is enough meat between the manifold collector and the turbo's exhaust inlet to cut and weld up a matching flange.

Which model turbo would that be?

the vw vnt has an integrated manifold, but it should be possible without too much work to cut the turbo off the manifold and weld a flange on.

all the vw TD turbos(except the T3) use the trapezoidal flange, K14, K24, T3 etc...

Not all the VNT's VAG used are integrated with the exhaust mani, Passat TDI ones for example. Find one tho...

true, I guess I should have said "the vast majority of vw vnt's"

the non integrated ones are really hard to find, it would be easier and cheaper to cut and weld an integrated one.

and what bolt pattern are the passat ones? not the trapezoidal I am sure...

I don't know about the passat ones shape... euro ebay sites are the best bet.

No chance of a 8v t25 gasser mani with an adapter plate fitting?

This: http://www.volkswaparts.com/VNTTurboGasket.htm is the gasket it uses.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

The vnt off the 04-05 TDI passat is also called a gt1749 VA, they used them here and in Europe on several motors.
