Hi, unfortunately, your compression ratio will be way too high with that combination.  The reason is because the the swirl chambers on the 1.6 head aren't big enough to handle a 1.9's worth of displacement squished into them.  Even using a thicker head gasket to compensate (which generally isn't considered a good idea on an IDI engine) won't be able to bring it in line.

1.9 head on a 1.6 works great, but a 1.6 head on a 1.9 is just pointless, i bet the engine would lose power.
the 1.9 head flows way better than a 1.6 head. and lowers the compression so we can build more boost.

hummm..but with a gasket more thicker i will able to lower de compression ratio...and the 1.6 i will increase the air flow and put bigger valves. Lose power i dont think so ,the risks
,is the engine crash, like in every modification is. I know a guy has done well and resulted.

The 1.9 head has bigger valves then the 1.6.

Putting a thicker head gasket in won't significantly reduce the compression ratio, but it will certainly screw up squish, quench, and the turbulence in the swirl chambers.

Good luck with your project

hillfolk has a mk2 coupe with a 1.9 block and 1.6 head he said it runs good, i think it's just na.  either way theres no way it runs as good as a regular 1.9 considering the valves and ports.

yea, not a chance in hell it will do as good w/ a 1.6 head. the valves are bigger, the ports are bigger, and i think the cam may even have more lift than a 1.6 cam. sure it will work, but why would you want to make it harder for your engine to breathe? that just sounds stupid. and you will probably have like 30:1 compression. thicker/more head gaskets work on gas engines, but they arent as critical on the squish, quench and turbulence in the combustion chamber.

1.9 head on 1.6 will do as much as the rest of the mods will support. The head allows better breathing, so you can do more with fuel, intake, boost, exhaust, etc. than what you could have before. This is all to a point, I don't think anyone has made over 300HP with one of the 1.6s. I know I have heard of some that were in the 250 range.

Just read the FAQ, search the archives and read the build threads. You'll find the info you are after :)

220 horsepower is going to be hard, well, rather, expensive to build.
