My Pump Started To Leak =(
« on: July 08, 2009, 10:41:53 am »
This engine is trying to not get in to my car I swear lol. I ran it on my stand off a bottle of ATF and then I let it sit in there for maybe a week and a half (is that too long to have it sit?). And now it is leaking in between the Green and Yellow pieces (following picture) except it seems it is either along the backside, or along the bottom because it is not from the front side or top. Most likely the bottom as liquid does like to flow down.. Also it doesn't seem to leak whilst not running. While running however it is maybe 2 drips a second :( quite the little problem. So my question is.. How hard is it to put a new seal there? Easy as taking out a couple bolts and replacing a gasket? Hope so! Wanna get this little guy in there soon! I don't quite got the available funds to allow Giles to work his magic just yet... Plus as Tyler says.. its best to put it in stock, feel how utter slow it is.. and then appreciate the benefits :)

I understand the pump will have to come off the engine, as will the wretched timing belt.. but its all good I know what I'm doing now :) PLUS this will give me a reason to take everything else off and give it a little cleaning :) lol My engine looks like the one in my picture... DIRTY lol

BTW this is not my pump lol. Don't have the means to get one of my own :P

Thanks a lot guys for all the help in advanced.

I would not recommend doing that seal in the car. Since you live in Canada, it's going to be rusty and corroded in there. It should be cleaned properly before you put a new seal back in there. I know others have done it successfuly, but I also know that others have not, and have actually caused some pretty expensive damage to their pump.

It's a risky play.

so from what i read.. you can back off the head while installing a longer bolt of the same thread to hold the cam down and then snip out and replace a new one? :) I wish to take it off the car so i can have some practice doing stuff you know? like doing the timing from scratch again. and all that junk. How much longer does this bolt need to be? like 1.5" bolt? should suffice if the plunger only has 1/8th of play or whatver..?

Tyler I will take the pump off no worries. Us Canadians fear the RUST!

Here's the thread on when I did mine with some pics that may be useful.

Be sure to take the precaution of keeping pressure on the plunger, which I didn't know about at the time but I escaped mayhem just by sheer luck. ;D

If I were to do it again, I'd take off the coolant flange for more working room.

Certain vendors of IP reseal kits claims that only a Viton o-ring can be stretched over the distributor head without being over stretched. Is there any truth to that? I got 3 Viton o-rings from my local hydraulic shop when I did mine by bringing in the non Viton o-ring from the Bosch kit and matching it up. PM me if you'd like a Viton O-ring.

I'm pretty sure the green o-ring in the Bosch kit IS Viton.
........

Andrew, have you verified that with Bosch?

Know any simple test that can be performed to tell what it is? I know Viton has a working temp of up to 450F with short excursion to even higher temp than 450. Maybe hold it up to a match flame and see how long it takes to deform?

My understanding is that color of o-rings is not a good indication of Viton, I have seen Viton o-rings in brown and black. I have a pack of  various size AC o-rings that are green but they are marked NBR.

Have you stretched one of those green O-rings from the Bosch kit over the head without over stretching? I am not sure if that is a good indication if it's viton or not since it is possible those who claim only viton will work just want to sell you one viton o-ring for $10!

FWIW, I replaced this seal in-car with no problems.  O-ring was green, everything went fine.

Or a 24mm wrench. You will find a plunger, spring and o-ring under the stop solenoid. Nothing will go boing on you though
