i didn't realize there were different prechambers

here is a thread i found, i wanted to see a cut away of our heads because i was thinking that maybe getting rid of the glow plugs in place of just of a plug would possibly be an easy way of lowering compression, and just using a dodge or ford diesel heater coil in place of the glow plugs.  but then i saw the pictures below which shows the solid lifter 1.6na and hydro lifter 1.6td as having different prechambers, i didn't know this.

I calculated the compression ratio drop of removing the glow plugs once, but it only came out to about a 0.5 drop in the ratio.  I should probably calculate it again, just to be sure.  I do like the idea of the heater coil in the intake manifold though.

The toaster, as the Ford mechanics call them, are a good idea. But I think it gets cold enough in York that you would have problems starting with only the toaster. The 2.0L Ford Escort diesel (my first new car ;-) had both GP and the toaster.

Don't most Cummins engines have just the toaster?

half a point is a pretty big gain imo, and if you used a plug that was hollowed out or one that didn't go in the entire way, you could probably gain an entire point or more.  regardless i was just surprised to see the difference in prechambers, i thought 1.6's were all the same.  is the difference between turbo and non turbo, or between hydraulic and solid lifter?

Just thought I would add the 1.5 head has the same size pre chamber as the 1.6 TD. I had bad cracks in my 1.6 TD head. I had an old 1.5 head that had the same size so I knocked them out and used them in the TD head.

DI engines have a waaaaayyyyy easier time starting cold due to the reduced heat losses to increased surface area of the pre-chamber. 

Doh, forgot about that little detail.
