Intermediate shaft bearings.
« on: June 21, 2005, 12:46:59 pm »
Just pulling a engine apart today and I found the intermediate shaft bearing at the cam belt end starting to break up.
So, as you do, looked on ETKA only to find no bearing!
Ring's local VW dealer, asks them, nope no bearing.
Right, I then ring 2 VW spurious parts suppliers, no, no bearings here!
Rings local motor factor, " Is it a big end, little end or main bearing!" they ask, "None" I retort "like I said, it's an intermediate shaft bearing" and went on to describe it's function and location only for them to to say they can't supply one!
So, rings local engine machine shop, nope not here either!
AAaarrgh!

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a source of intermediate shaft bearings?
Are they the same as the petrol engined ones?
Im just off for a look through ETKA at petrol engines now!
Oh, also rang VEGE, who remanufacture engines in Europe, they said they would ask where their rebuilders get them from and I have to ring them back, so that may be one avenue to explore.

Seems you guys have the monoply on intermediate shaft bearings in the US.
I did however find on Bus Boys website 2 part numbers.
049 115 541
049 115 542
The version of ETKA im running doesn't recognise those part numbers though, can anyone check that they are the right bearings?

A couple of years ago, Quick TD posted the I-shaft bearing part numbers elsewhere:

http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=688

His part #s were totally different from the ones that you quote - they are 056 103 521 and 056 103 501, the latter being dropped without replacement.

I was never clear from that thread what the difference between these two bearings was, but apparently QTD got them to work just fine in his AAZ engine.

Cool, thanks for that.
It makes interesting reading.
I'll ring my dealer now and see what they say about these.
056 103 521
056 103 501
I wonder where BusBoys got these part numbers from?
049 115 541
049 115 542
Im sure there is a Clevite dealer too around these parts so I'll have a go with
SH-12095
Also.
Again, many thanks.
Simon.

Blimey.
VW say obsolete!
They nor I can find a picture of them on ETKA niether.
Can't find a Clevite dealer locally.
Waiting to hear back from a couple of places, not looking good though.
Looks like I may be getting stung on some import duty in the not too distant future!

Kolbenschmidt (vw's OEM supplier) still lists intermediate shaft bearings in their catalog. They might be a better source than clevite in the UK.

The kolbenschmidt numbers are,

Finished bored to standard size:

front - 85 957 604
rear - 85 958 604

If you prefer semi finished bearings that must be honed to size at installation, the part numbers are as follows

front - 85 957 694
rear - 85 958 694

The semi-finished bearings are most often used by rebuilders to salvage worn intermediate shafts. If your intermediate shaft is in good condition I would go with the finished bore bearings.

Heh, was just going to post the same part numbers!
Managed to find some un finished ones, got the bare block ready to take to a machine shop for the line boring in the morning.
Not so cheap mind, in future if I can get the finished one I can do the job myself.
You would not believe the amount of ringing I have had to do just to get these bearings.
The bearings that came out did have a part number on,
056 501
056 521
But again, numbers don't compute.
Using VW's parts numbering system then group 1 is engine, 03 is crank.
using 056 103 521 B or C I think cam up as a crank bearings and not a I shaft bearing, dunno where those numbers came from but I 99% sure they ain't right, well, not here anyway.
Found a Clevite source, again the part numbers don't make sense in the UK and they couldn't help.
At least I have a solution for the minute, I must remember this for next time I have another rebuild on my hands as Im having to travel 20 odd miles to get the line boring done as the local places can't do the bearing to different sizes, okay with cranks, cams etc but his really threw them! They then went on to say that this engine was dying and im unlikely to see anymore(!?) Seeing as I specialise in the T3 I think there will be more to come!
Oh well, out of the sh!t for the minute, the next one will be easier!

I was going to rebuild an Audi 3A engine a while back, but it needed to be bored and I couldn't find reasonably priced pistons so I gave up. But, I bought these at the time:

They also had some unfinished ones but these seemed easier. They came from Ovals Motorsport in Federal Way, Washington. (253) 874-8290.

That answers a question then as they say they interchange with SH1290s and not 905 as I had written!
So, to add some more to the list then.

Durabond               - VWG-1
Clevite                   - SH1209S
Karl Colben Shmidt - fnt - 85 957 604
                             - rr - 85 958 604

The groove shoots a jet of oil at the oil/vacuum pump bevel drive gears, it's by design. Just remember to install it in the proper direction...

I have I-shaft bearings made by 3 different manufacturers.
 durabond fits a little loose
 cleveite fits best,
and metal leve will need to be line bored because they are too tight.

Whats the chances of any of you lot with ample supplies of I Shaft bearings accross there in the US/Can posting me a couple of sets out, after the last episode of me trying to get some here I really don't relish the phone bill from me ring around everywhere trying to find a set!
