AC Wiring Help!!!
« on: June 25, 2008, 12:58:01 am »
So I got my '85 Jetta a couple years ago with nearly 400K miles on it.  The AC compressor was in place but disconnected, the other parts were there but no expectation that anything really worked...

So because I'm a glutton for torture, I decided to try and reconstruct the AC and get it working.  I've already put in a new compressor and expansion valve, new condenser and dryer are ready to go in, however the BIG problem is the wiring, nothing is hooked up :(

I think I figured out what plug connects to the AC compressor, but one of the wires is simply cut, where does this go?

Also I've got this whole loop of connectors, I think they are AC related, where do they all go?

Lastly this connector goes to the wiring on the fan relay, also AC related?

Thanks!

Looks like someone pulled the mini-loom for the ac compressor and fan switch. You'll need that to fix it. The loom from an 8V gasser should be the same for the 1985 year. That should have all the wires you need, and you could probably toos all that rat-nest wiring.

Ahhhh...I'm actually missing something eh?  That makes more sense.  Anybody have a picture of what it looks like and/or suggestion on where to scrounge one up?

your fan should turn on when a/c is on (there is a resistor near the fan to give you the lower fan speed)

some of those extra wires are to kick on the a/c fan high speed when the refrigerant reaches a higher temperature, or to kick it off when the pressure inside the system reaches a low point (i think it shuts off at 10-15 psi or so???)

looks like you have your work 'cut' out for you.  pun intended

if you get stuck maybe i can trace my wires and take some pics for you.  whoever fixed my fan sure did a hack job of my wires, so i had to fix a few as well...
