Rough idle after a hard run
« on: June 30, 2006, 08:19:18 pm »
Hi Everyone.  After I drive at 120-125 (especially with the A/C on) my car idles VERY rough.  If I raise the rpms to 1200+ then it smothes out.  It will idle well again when the car sits and cools down for a few hours.

When it is idling, it gets even rougher when the rad fan kicks in.  I did an rpm leak test on the injectors like the bentley says and it all seemed fine.

My car is a 1.6td with A/C and 471,000 km on it.  I have never changed the injectors.  I am wondering if I should look into that or just drive it until it quits and then drop in the engine I picked up that only has 80,000 km on it.

Any help would be appreciated.  Also, what is the best place to get vw diesel work done in Toronto, preferably the east end.

Thanks,
Trevor

Well the car is certainly due for injectors, no doubt about that. However you might also check the alternator. The A/C and rad fan really draw a lot of amps which makes the alternator work a lot harder and drag on the belt which drags on the engine.

Moved to Troubleshooting.  IDI Engine is for power enhancement related discussion only.

I just replaced the alternator power cable with 2/0.  I had replaced the battery cables with 4/0 last fall.  It runs smoother now, but not how it should.  So I guess injectors are the next step?
