Nissan 720 pickup questions (SD22)

so, my cousin just got a old nissan SD22 pickup. couple things i noticed about it.

1.) there is no throttle to the injection pump? a diesel with a throttle body? REALLY?! come on now... and is the shut off for the engine supposed to be a manual operated rod? ive never laid hands on one of these engines before, and they are DEFINITELY nothing like a VW!

2.) the bell housing pattern is most definitely different from a Z24 bell housing right? it doesnt even look the same. but someone told my cousin that a Z24 tranny will bolt to the back of a SD22.. i dont see it happening..

86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

The injector pump is controlled by a vaccum signal coming from a throttle plate in the intake, like the really early MB diesels. They have a wierd electric motor controlled rotary thingy that controlls glowplug switching, cold start advance, and engine shutdown. I know an old guy who installed on of these motors in a full size Dodge truck, drove it for a few years, then built his own steel and aluminum body and box on a 3/4 ton GMC frame, and put the Nissan engine and trans in it, coupled to a Ford transfer case permanently in low range. Top speed is only about 35mph, perfect for the dirt roads around here. Enough torque to pull huge logs out of the woods, which he freqently does. Oh, and he welded up the diff. so it will go anywhere without getting stuck.

ok, well i will be surprised if it will run then, because its missing lots of stuff. like i said, it has a rod thru the firewall to shut it down. no vacuum operated accessories that i can see.. and theres nothing coming off the throttle body going to the inj pump..

whats the purpose of the throttle body on a sd 22?

IIRC, these engines were used in industrial applications like forklifts so finding hard parts may not be such a problem (assuming there are still a significant number of them in use). I also think the bellhousing pattern was some form of SAE type bellhousing like you would see in industrial/heavy duty applications and adapted to the Nissan trans.

I've seen the 6 cylinder variant of these in IH Scouts, they also have a mechanical engine shut down like a lot of older diesels did (not such a bad idea IMO) and a manually controlled glow plug circuit.

Anyway have you looked here, you would probably have more luck:

so you can take the front case half off the diesel trans and use it on the gasser trans... NICE!

any one know how the fuel lines are run in the engine room? its basically a bosch inline P pump..

bought the truck and some tweeker stole all the rubber fuel lines off it.
there is an inlet to the primer, im assuming that thats where you hook up the feed line from the tank?
then theres an outlet on the primer. assuming that goes to the fuel filter?
and a line out of the filter to the line that runs to the front of the pump? or is that the return line out of the pump?

this is definitely not a VW diesel.. and im SO lost..

If my info is correct, The SD22 was used in '82 and earlier trucks, and the SD25 was '83 and up... And in 4x2 models only..  I may have some limited info available on Alldata for that.. I'll do some checking...

I don;t know if these will do you much good or not.. Like I said, not a whole lot available on Alldata for these..  The First pic is from the bleeding procedure, second from the timing procedure, third is from the altitude compensator adjustment section...

A bad battery cable or connection would be too easy....  If you find yourself in need I have some wiring diagrams for that..  IDK if '83 would be the same, but there seems to be much more available for '83 and up than '82 and back...

i think the 83 and newer trucks had the SD25 engine, and things were quite different on those..

wiring, i think they would be very similar tho, minus the electronic pump control on the SD22. SD25 uses a bosch style rotory pump, i want the pump for my SD22..
