Turbo'ing my NA 1.6d
« on: December 19, 2007, 04:54:17 am »
Hi all,

Ok, I got all the parts (I hope) to turbo my 1.6d. Now, the block is a NA1.6 with NA 1.6 pistons. I don't want to go over normal boost 10PSI?. Will the pistons be ok?

I am new to this all so please excuse me for dumb questions.

I've looked into this myself.  Where do you connect oil feed from the motor?  I assume you drill a hole into the oil pan for the return.

the real sweet spot is in the block! drill and tap the block for the oil return line from the Turbo! but there are all sorts of different routs you can go!

Not to highjack, but:

Is the exhaust manifold the same height as the NA manifold so you can just bolt (Spring?) up the same exhaust?  I am considering doing a complete TD swap in my NA Golf and was wondering I would have to redo the exhaust.

I think it's close enough that it doesn't matter. I swapped a 1.6 NA into a mk2 that had a 1.6 TD and a 1.9 TD in it over the course of it's life. The downpipe didn't have to be changed

I was thinking MKI. Its off by about 2-3 inches IIRC. I know I had to section the downpipe on my last Scirocco TD just to make sure the rest of the exhaust was straight. not sure on the MKII but I know its a different length there too. You could run into steering rack rubbage...

To the OP, I think you would be just fine with what you have. The amount of boost is pretty much irrelevant as more boost lowers EGTs on the Diesel which is the opposite of a gasser. Make sure you put a preturbo EGT probe in with a pyrometer to monitor the temps. That way you can KNOW if you are doing damage to the engine and tune accordingly.

[runs an 11mm NA engine @23 PSI]

Did you say diesel Scirocco?     HMMMM.    what about a TDI-M  in a Scirocco?

Sorry for the compression ignition interjection.  I haven't been here for a while and the Scirocco diesel thing caught my interest in a big way.  :o

Thanks for the    :D

Hi All...

This past  weekend I put on the turbo for my NA Diesel. One question, it smokes like crazy...black smoke...is this normal?
